Zelienople’s rich history dates back to 1802 when Detmar Basse, a German immigrant and aristocrat, purchased 10,000 acres of post-Revolutionary War Depreciation Lands. He named the picturesque new town after his eldest daughter, Zelie. By 1826, the village had grown to include 50 houses and three churches, and in 1840, it was officially incorporated as a borough.
Today, with a population of around 4,000, Zelienople perfectly balances its historic roots—evident in its beautifully restored downtown buildings and Victorian homes—with the demands of the 21st century.
